Off The Blog

for Friday, September 2, 2005

First off, I've been remiss on updating this blog in anything even remotely ressembling a timely fashion, but as I mentioned before, I usually just don't have that much to say.

Well, today I do.

The destruction on the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Katrina is, to put it mildly, staggering and utterly unbelievable. It's difficult to put into words. My heart goes out to the victims and refugees, and I pray safety, order and recovery are swift. That said, I'm also disgusted at the said turn of events in human nature. The looting for food and medicine is understandable. Looting of televisions and other products is sad but not surprising. The looting of guns is alarming but also not entirely surprising. But some of the more recent developments, such as sniper fire on a hospital evacuation and new reports of rampant rapes and other violence is just sickening. I generally tend to have a favorable perception of my fellow man, but this makes one wonder.

That said, I have faith in both God as well as federal, state and local authorities to do what needs to be done to bring the Gulf Coast as well as our country as a whole back to normal as quickly as possible. Also, I urge you to donate to the American Red Cross or do what you can to help those in need.

Finally, a quick comment on Tuesday's comic. I made this one before the extent of Katrina's damage was known and in fact drew it while Katrina was still over Florida. I wasn't and am not in any way making light of the plight of those left devastated by Katrina, but the comic was a commentary on the absurdity of news organizations putting journalists in harm's way in the name of sensationalism.

God bless.
