Another gift for Jefra Daye, hence the reprise at the end. Actually, since it was written for the same person, it's intended to be more of a stylistic parody of "Jefra Daye," so the two sound similar. In fact, I almost used the same chord structure, but opted against it. However, its placement on the album is quite intentional, as I feel it tends to bring the music full circle. Thematically, it's about a man who wants to give the one he loves the world, but can't afford it, so he gives her flowers and diamonds. Or rather, what he pretends to be flowers and diamonds, that is, paper and glass, because he can't afford the real thing. But it's the thought that counts, I suppose.
Flowers and diamonds and a token or two
Flowers and diamonds all meant just for you
Believe me when I say
I don't have a lot to spare
I am just a poor man
With a hole burning in my pocket
But I say the devil-may-care
Flowers and diamonds and perhaps a little gold
Flowers and diamonds to have and to hold
There are games I don't play
I don't fold at any price
But I am just a poor man
And I can't afford to impress you
But I'll make the sacrifice
Flowers and diamonds
Paper and flash
Are so real to me but in reality
Are nothing more than paper and glass
Flowers and diamonds I promise to you
Flowers and diamonds what more can I do
Believe me when I say
Someday they'll be in your hands
But I am just a poor man
So if it takes a little time
Well I hope you'll understand
Toe-tapping, finger-snapping, take your cares away
Then you know the Jefra Daye
Hand-clapping, let it happen, make you smile
I say, that's the Jefra Daye
Toe-tapping, finger-snapping, take your cares away
Then you know the Jefra Daye
Hand-clapping, let it happen, make you smile
I say, that's the Jefra Daye
